Activist Commentary: Jana is a very experienced activist investor founded in 2001 by Barry Rosenstein. Wolfspeed is the world's leading producer of silicon carbide, or SiC, and a manufacturer of silicon carbide applications. Jana also recommends that the board commences a review of strategic alternatives, including a possible sale of the company. At Freshpet, Jana also made operational and capital allocation recommendations in addition to reviewing a sale of the company. Here, there has been no such mention of a "Jana Dream Team," but it is a little too early for that.

Activist investor Jana Partners disclosed in a letter Monday that it has built a "significant" position in semiconductor manufacturer Wolfspeed and urged the company to resolve what it called a "staggering erosion of shareholder value," up to and including a sale. In the letter to Wolfspeed's board, viewed by CNBC, Jana wrote that the semiconductor company's "differentiated manufacturing capabilities" and status as an "American supplier supporting the energy transition" gave it significant intrinsic value. Jana also wrote that management's missteps around capital allocation, execution and strategy had depressed the stock. Wolfspeed, formerly known as Cree, is a supplier of electronic components and semiconductors used to manage electricity, often in cars. Jana said Wolfspeed's board should "promptly" begin a comprehensive review of the business, up to and including a sale.

Iowa's 94-87 win against LSU in the Elite Eight on Monday drew 12.3 million viewers, the most in women's college basketball history, according to ESPN. That figure topped the previous high of 9.9 million viewers from last season's NCAA championship game between the same programs. ESPN said Monday's figure was the highest viewership for any college basketball game ever on its platforms and the second-highest of any basketball game — college or NBA — since 2012. FanDuel told CNBC on Tuesday that Iowa-LSU was also its biggest betting event of all time for women's sports. ESPN said the women's Elite Eight averaged 6.2 million viewers, up 184% year-over-year, and represented four of the top five most-watched games in that round on record.

(AP) — President Joe Biden's personal attorney said Sunday he went to both the special counsel and the attorney general to register concerns over what he viewed to be pejorative and unnecessary digs at the president's memory. “This is a report that went off the rails,” Bob Bauer said on CBS' Face the Nation Sunday. “It’s evident that he had committed to make the report public the way that the special counsel had written it,” said Bauer. He said the special counsel made a decision “to cherry pick in a very misleading way” what references made it in and what didn't. The Justice Department has not commented on the criticism.

The man Mr. Garland tapped for the job, Robert K. Hur, has not been quite as cautious. On Thursday, Mr. Hur, 50, a former Justice Department official in the Trump administration, dropped a 345-page political bomb into the middle of the 2024 campaign, the final report summing up his investigation. The Hur report underlines the challenges of deploying special counsels, which are intended to shield prosecutors from political meddling, but often result in the release of negative information about high-profile targets who have been cleared of criminal wrongdoing. It also showed the complicated balance of the job — navigating a polarized environment that leaves little option but to expansively explain the rationale for any decision. Mr. Hur is no stranger to high-wire investigations and legal conflict.

By Kanishka SinghWASHINGTON (Reuters) - Robert Hur, the special counsel appointed to investigate whether President Joe Biden improperly handled sensitive government documents, is a former high-ranking Justice Department official with experience in prosecuting sensitive leak investigations. On Thursday, he concluded that probe and found that Biden retained classified materials about Afghanistan after leaving the vice presidency in 2017 but said he will not be criminally charged. Hur was appointed by Donald Trump in 2018 as the chief federal law enforcement officer in Maryland and left that position in early 2021. Under Hur, the Maryland U.S. attorney's office prosecuted the case of former National Security Agency contractor Harold Martin, who stole huge amounts of classified material from U.S. intelligence agencies. A graduate of Stanford Law School and Harvard College, Hur served as top aide to then-Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein before his appointment as the U.S. attorney in Maryland.

REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsDec 4 (Reuters) - Activist investment firm Jana Partners is urging Frontier Communications (FYBR.O) to begin a strategic review, including a possible sale of the telecommunications company, arguing that its shares will continue to lag unless corrective action is taken. In the letter, the partners said they have spoken with potential strategic and financial buyers who have "indicated interest in participating in a company-initiated review process." A Jana spokesman declined to comment and a representative for Frontier did not immediately respond to a request for comment. In the letter Jana said Frontier's lagging stock price is linked to the fact the company hasn't been able to attract new investors since exiting bankruptcy in 2021.

New York CNN —Martinis and margaritas might still be people’s drink of choice, but the spritz is bubbling to the top. Bartenders are experimenting so much with the spritz, swapping in different liqueurs or juices in place of Campari or Aperol, that it’s becoming the “cocktail for the moment” and expanding its appeal year-round, a recent report from bar analytics service Union said. “By all accounts, the spritz has had a smashing year, showing strong growth across every month, peaking smack-dab in the middle of summer,” Union said. Data shows that spritz sales started growing in sales this year a month earlier — in April — than usual. Just scrolling on TikTok, Rosenstein notices different variations of a spritz (such as a Hugo spritz, made with St-Germain elderflower liqueur, or a Lillet spritz made with the wine-based liqueur) in her feed.

Many in the White House were blindsided when AG Garland appointed a special counsel to investigate Biden, WaPo reported. The GOP has accused the special counsel Robert Hur of being partisan, but a former Trump lawyer disagreed, saying he's "smart and experienced." That's why many in the White House were blindsided, according to The Washington Post, when Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed a special counsel to investigate Biden's mishandling of classified information. Republicans and Democrats alike have criticized the Biden White House for failing to disclose the existence of the DOJ's investigation for two months, despite having known about it since November. But Ty Cobb, who once served as Trump's White House counsel, dismissed those concerns.
WASHINGTON—When Rod Rosenstein left the Justice Department in 2019 after a rocky two years as deputy attorney general, his former top aide and protégé, Robert Hur, delivered a roast recalling the office’s capacity for comedic relief amid adversity. “When you’re going through tough times, when you say, ‘You can’t make this stuff up,’ you can either laugh or you can cry,” Mr. Hur said. “I certainly don’t remember any crying.”Mr. Hur’s resilience will soon be tested again. On Thursday, Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed him as special counsel to oversee the investigation into classified documents discovered at President Biden’s home and an office he used at a Washington think tank following his vice presidency.
REUTERS/Michael A. McCoyWASHINGTON, Jan 13 (Reuters) - U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland on Thursday named Robert Hur as special counsel to investigate whether President Joe Biden had improperly handled sensitive government documents. Hur was the U.S. attorney in Maryland during the Trump administration and most recently served as litigation partner at law firm Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher. A graduate of Stanford Law School and Harvard College, Hur served as top aide to then-Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein before his appointment as the U.S. Attorney in Maryland. He knows what he is getting into," Rosenstein told CNN on Thursday after Hur's appointment as special counsel. "I will conduct the assigned investigation with fair, impartial, and dispassionate judgment," Hur said in a statement released after his appointment as special counsel.
WASHINGTON — Robert Hur, named Thursday by Attorney General Merrick Garland to oversee the investigation into President Joe Biden's handling of classified documents, is a former federal prosecutor who has worked with many Republicans throughout his law enforcement career. Garland appointed Hur as special counsel on Thursday after the White House acknowledged that Obama administration documents with classified markings were found in one of Biden’s Delaware homes. On Monday, the White House said that similar documents had been found in a Washington office. Hur has served as a partner at the law firm Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher since April 2021 where he has focused on enforcement, investigations and litigation. In between his jobs at the Justice Department, Hur worked at another private law firm, King & Spalding.
Indict Trump? It’s Still Merrick Garland’s Decision

When Attorney General Merrick Garland announced on Nov. 18 that Jack Smith would take charge as special counsel in two high-profile criminal investigations of Donald Trump, he omitted an important detail: As head of the Justice Department, Mr. Garland will remain accountable for deciding whether to indict the former president. As Attorney General Janet Reno emphasized when she promulgated the special counsel regulations in 1999, “ultimate responsibility” for such investigations “will continue to rest with the Attorney General.” In other words, the special counsel isn’t fully independent. Their wide-ranging and long-lasting investigations led to bipartisan criticism of the independent-counsel model as having too much autonomy. Reno’s regulations sought to correct that imbalance by making special counsels analogous to U.S. attorneys, whose discretionary decisions about matters within their jurisdiction may be overturned by the attorney general. These regulations ensure oversight in six ways.
Randy Mastro, a fixture at Gibson Dunn since 1998, is leaving the firm, four people told Insider. Star attorney Randy Mastro is leaving Gibson Dunn & Crutcher after more than 20 years, four people told Insider. Mastro has spent more than two decades at Gibson Dunn, which he first joined in 1989. By 2014, Chevron had run up a $32 million tab with Gibson Dunn, a bill it tried to make Donziger pay, according to Reuters. Do you know Randy Mastro or more about why he left Gibson Dunn?
Nabilah Islam wants the Federal Election Commission to let federal candidates use donor money for expanded salaries and health insurance. "The current system makes it prohibitive for working Americans to run for office," Islam told Insider. "Every American should have a living wage and health insurance when they run for office," Islam told Insider. In general, federal law prohibits federal candidates from using campaign cash on personal expenditures — so forget that donor-funded Rolex or dream trip to Maui. For example, it ruled in 2018 that federal candidates may use campaign funds to pay for certain child care expenses.
